Who we are

At Sophia Healing Centre you are cared for by a small, experienced team of general practitioners who are also trained in anthroposophic medicine. Dr Richard Drexel, Dr Helen Proctor and Dr Rob Maunsell each bring decades of medical practice, further training in integrative and movement-based therapies, and a shared commitment to seeing the whole human being – body, soul and spirit. While their individual paths and special interests are diverse, they work from a common foundation: careful listening, thoughtful diagnosis, and treatment plans that combine the best of conventional medicine with anthroposophic remedies, movement, artistic and lifestyle approaches, so that healing can unfold in a way that is both medically sound and deeply human.

Dr Richard E. Drexel

General Practitioner & Anthroposophic Doctor

Dr Richard Drexel is a general practitioner and anthroposophic doctor at Sophia Healing Centre, based at the Weleda New Zealand site in Havelock North. He also works as a GP at The Doctors Greenmeadows in Napier, where he brings a whole-person approach into everyday general practice.

Originally from Germany, Richard studied medicine at the University of Witten/Herdecke and the University of Hamburg, where he was introduced to a view of health that unites rigorous medical science with a deeper understanding of the human being. He went on to train in curative eurythmy, and has been active for many years in anthroposophic medicine and adult education in Europe and now Aotearoa New Zealand.

Richard’s consultations are calm, spacious and collaborative. He takes time to understand the story behind symptoms, and to work with patients on treatment paths that may include conventional medicine, anthroposophic remedies, movement and rhythm, and practical lifestyle changes. Alongside his clinical work, he contributes to trainings and conferences on resilience, mental health and community, supporting people to meet the challenges of modern life with warmth and clarity.

Dr Helen Proctor

General Practitioner & Anthroposophic Doctor

Dr Helen Proctor is a general practitioner and anthroposophic doctor at Sophia Healing Centre in Havelock North, and a GP at The Doctors Greenmeadows in Napier. She works with children, young people and adults, offering a continuity of care that weaves together mainstream general practice and anthroposophic insights.

Helen’s medical work is grounded in a view of the human being that includes body, soul and spirit. In her consultations she listens carefully, exploring both the medical picture and the life context around an illness. Treatment plans may include conventional medicine, anthroposophic remedies, rhythm and movement, and gentle shifts in daily life that strengthen long-term wellbeing.

Beyond her clinic work, Helen supports Taikura Rudolf Steiner School as a local school doctor, contributing to child studies, meeting with students, whānau and teachers, and helping to shape thoughtful support plans. She also co-leads eurythmy and healing-movement courses and shares her experience at youth and community gatherings in Aotearoa and Australia. Across all of these settings, her focus is on fostering healthy development and a sense of meaning and connection.

Dr Rob Maunsell

General Practitioner & Specialist in Anthroposophic Medicine

Dr Rob Maunsell is a general practitioner and anthroposophic doctor at Sophia Healing Centre in Havelock North. He also consults through Weleda Pharmacy and works with patients in the wider Wellington region, offering integrative care that draws on many decades of medical practice.

Rob has been a GP since the mid-1970s. Early in his career he began to deepen his work through anthroposophic medicine, undertaking extended clinical training in Germany and the UK, including time at Klinik Öschelbronn, Park Attwood Clinic and in Camphill communities. On returning to Aotearoa, he developed a long-standing general practice in Hawke’s Bay, gradually shaping his work around both conventional care and anthroposophic therapies.

Today, Rob’s practice allows time for unhurried, in-depth consultations. He works with patients to explore the deeper causes of illness, and to find appropriate treatments ranging from standard medical interventions to “living medicines”, psychotherapeutic and artistically based therapies, and practical changes in lifestyle. A musician as well as a doctor, he values creativity, connection and joy as essential elements of a truly healthy life, and brings that understanding into his work with individuals and communities.
